MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A VISION... A FUTURE

"With a firm purpose and rational programs, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas wants to bring basketball in the Philippines to greater heights. Unity... Commitment...Victory... National Pride and Identity...are the pillars from which SBP gathers its inspiration and strength. From ground up, it will build. From new to something, it will prove. We believe in this dream. I can already see it so vividly in my mind, the picture of the day when basketball athletes parade in the streets of Manila, overflowing with ecstatic onlookers, while the athletes' faces are beaming with pride after a triumphant game in the Olympics It is possible. With God's grace, we will do it."

Manuel V. Pangilinan
President
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S WELCOME MESSAGE

Welcome to the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) website. The SBP is the Philippines’ national basketball sports association. Our organization aims to unite the different basketball organizations in the Philippines ensuring order, credibility, and consistency. We develop and provide sports competitions, camps, clinics, development programs, and other basketball events. The SBP is affiliated with Fiba (Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur)

Fiba is the world governing body for basketball, formed by 213 National Federations of basketball around the world and that includes the Philippines. It is also recognized as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee. As such, it establishes the official basketball rules, competition regulations, and equipment and facilities regulations.

As Executive Director of the SBP, you can be assured of my unanimity and commitment. I focus on programs instead of personalities. I have lived in Cebu and Davao for a total of 10 years that is why I know by heart the need for an honest to goodness countryside grassroots program for basketball.

Basketball here in the Philippines has the potential to elevate itself to greater heights. We aim to win. And the desire to win must emanate from the heart and not from the mind. In SBP, our passion is basketball.

"One Team. Our Dream" That is the battlecry of the SBP.

The Board of Trustees of BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) in a meeting held on 4th April 2008 approved the recommendation of the Nominations and Elections Committee (NOMELCOM), headed by Chairman Eliezer Capacio, to grant active and voting membership status to fifteen (15) basketball organizations nationwide. These qualified organizations are:

14. Pinoy Basketball, Inc.

The NOMELCOM was tasked by the Board to review the application and credentials of ninety six (96) basketball organizations, most of which were submitted by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) and Pilipinas Basketball (PB) to FIBA. The validation of the members’ list is in fulfillment of the mandate given to the 3-Man Panel formed pursuant to the Tokyo Communiqué dated 28th August 2006, which Communiqué was agreed by both the BAP and PB and witnessed by FIBA.

As part of the validation process, the NOMELCOM has classified these organizations into active, associate, and affiliate members based on certain criteria defined under the BAP-SBP By-Laws.
Active members must be sports associations that actively conduct regular basketball tournaments for at least two (2) consecutive, uninterrupted years and in each of which years, the duration of the tournament is at least three months with at least six ball clubs or teams participating per tournament. Active members have voting rights.

Associate membership is open to sports associations that conduct programs in or allied with basketball as a competitive sport but do not qualify for active membership.

Affiliate membership is open to organizations that promote basketball in their activities.

The organizations that did not make active membership status as at the Board Meeting date of 4th April have been given by the Board up to 15th April 2008 to submit their credentials and proof of qualification in order to render them eligible to vote in the National Congress scheduled for next month. The NOMELCOM will process such credentials and is expected to make the necessary recommendations to the Board by 25th April. Soon thereafter, the Board – acting through its Executive Committee – will announce the final list of validated active members and call for nominations for sectoral representatives to the Board of Trustees which will be elected in May.

The Board has set the National Congress of members on 31st May 2008.
