The Samahang Basketbol
ng Pilipinas (SBP), through the Asian Referees Academy of the Philippines
(ARAP), is launching the pilot program on improving basketball game officiating
in the country, for local referees in Nueva Ecija on March 6-9 at the
Araullo University in Cabanatuan City.
Aimed with the
twin objectives of professionalizing the career of a basketball referee
and enhancing the skills and competence of the current ranks of referees
in the country, some of the country’s top referees (Romy Guevarra,
Vic Maglaya and Franco Ilagan) and supported by leading coach Fritz Gaston,
have banded together a short training program under the SBP’s Asian
Referees Academy of the Philippines (ARAP).
About 30 of the
top and active referees in Nueva Ecija will be attending, and will be
the first batch of local referees who will undergo this first-of-a-kind
and top-notch training that will be conducted by ARAP. The ARAP is expected
to be the leading educational institution for learning basketball officiating,
not only in the Philippines but also in Asia.
SBP is looking
at ARAP to be the main catalyst in producing the country’s top 24
referees, who will eventually become “international referees”
and/or also produce the future top referees that will be licensed and
be properly accredited in officiating SBP-sanctioned tournaments in the
country.
A series of training
clinics by ARAP will also be conducted in other parts of the country in
the near future, all under the auspices and support of the SBP and its
area/regional heads and directors in North-Central Luzon, Metro Manila,
South Luzon-Bicol, Visayas and Mindanao. For inquiries about the Program,
can contact Fritz Gaston at the SBP office at (02) 706-2970 and/or Vic
Maglaya at 0928-7765959.
Presentations
and an open-forum about existing and upcoming programs were discussed
with much excitement and eagerness from everybody. Rey Gamboa shared with
the participants the concept and format of the National Collegiate Champions
League while Legendary Coach Joe Lipa whose enthusiasm in bringing back
to life basketball in the country passionately shared his expertise and
experience that even the already basketball fanatic crowd became even
more after his talk. Coaches’ Commission Chairman Bernie Atienza
also presented the NCALP’s (National Coaches’ Accreditation
and Licensing Program) progress to date. The newly formed Referee’s
Program was presented by Referees Program Manager Frtiz Gaston.
Also in attendance
was BAP-SBP Vice Chairman Mr. Ricky Vargas, Phil. Olympic Festival Chairman
Robert Aventajado who likewise did a presentation on the Philippine Olympic
Festival.
Executive Director
Patrick Gregorio was pleased with the turn out of the event setting aside
any political issues which he and MVP say have no place in Pilipinas Basketball.
After all, BAP-SBP is in the field of sports, operating with the help
of kind hearted sponsors who believe that “Ang Basketbol ay Buhay
ng Pinoy !”
